Tokuji Hayakawa
Sharp traces it history back to 1912, when its founder Tokuji Hayakawa - only 18 years old at the time - established a small metalworking shop in Tokyo. Having been researching and developing techniques to manufacture a metal writing instrument, in 1915 he invented the hugely popular mechanical pencil - christened the “Ever Sharp Pencil” - from which the company now gets its name. With this inspiration and innovation was born a powerful manufacturing legacy, based on Mr Hayakawa’s aspiration to “Make products that other companies want to imitate”.
