History
Founded by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik in 1891, Philips began producing carbon-filament lamps and other electro-technical products from a factory in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands. By the 20s, the business had expanded their output to include items such as vacuum tubes, the 30s saw the evolution of a Philips radio with a built-in speaker, and in 1939 they introduced their first electric razor. Following the turmoil of World War II, Philips returned as innovative force - by 1949 it was selling the TV sets, introduced the Compact Audio Cassette tape in 1953, and the first video cassette recorder by 1972. Philips continue to innovative into the 21st century, with products that are optimised for the needs and desires of consumers.

Sustainability
Philips is committed to using innovation to improve the health of the world and its people. With their EcoVision program, they have committed to improving the lives of 3 billion people a year (every fourth person in the world) by 2025, adopting the findings of the WWF Living Planet Report to inspire strategies and practices that improve quality of life, while focussing on environmental sustainability. As part of this initiative, Philips has developed a "green logo", which indentifies products which offer excellent ecological performance.
