Innovation
The Dyson legacy was famously born out of a moment of inspiration: when, in 1978, James Dyson realised that the bag in his vacuum cleaner was causing its suction to drop. Having just developed an industrial cyclone tower for his factory that used centrifugal force to separate paint particles from the air, he wondered if the same science could be applied to a vacuum cleaner. Doggedly pursuing this idea through five years and 5127 prototypes, he invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner.

Research and development
Dyson is always investigating how it can improve and enhance its products. From their headquarters in Malmesbury, England, James Dyson and his team set a remarkable standard, continuously conducting research, design and development. With this progressive zeal, the company has evolved from the idea of a single man into a global phenomenon with 100 engineers worldwide. Dyson machines have now been sold in 65 countries, bringing the benefits of invention, inspiration and industry to the world.

The James Dyson Foundation
The story of Dyson is one of invention and ongoing commitment to attaining new standards. Engineering has always been at the core of this success, which is why James Dyson is passionate about helping the next generation to pursue this field. As part of this commitment, the James Dyson Foundation has been established to provide support to students and their teachers with bursaries, education programmes and education materials.
